Text On 18 March 1977, Mário Soares, Portuguese Prime Minister, makes a statement to the Assembly of the Republic (Portuguese Parliament) on the proposed accession of Portugal to the European Economic Community (EEC) and outlines the outcome of his tour of the capital cities of the nine Member States of the European Communities.
