And who’s going to sit at the front?’ On 8 July 1980, as French President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing makes a state visit to the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), German cartoonist Klaus Pielert illustrates the good relations between the French President and Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt (on the left) and paints an ironic picture of the power relationship within the Franco-German tandem.
