In this interview excerpt, Sir Brian Unwin, President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) from 1993 to 1999, describes how the EIB decided to take a more proactive approach to tackling unemployment. He particularly refers to the establishment by the EIB in 1997 of the Amsterdam programme for growth and employment or ‘Amsterdam Special Action Programme’ (ASAP). Finally, he speaks about the aid granted to small and medium-sized enterprises through the European Investment Fund.
