In this interview excerpt, Sir Brian Unwin, a senior official in Her Majesty’s Treasury from 1968 to 1985 and Secretary in charge of the Treasury’s Central Unit with responsibility for management of the budget from 1978 to 1983, discusses his duties with regard to the planning of the budget in the United Kingdom, particularly mentioning how this task was complicated by the change of government in 1979 and the arrival in power of Margaret Thatcher.
