Bild ‘Germany/France: Standard of living.’ On 29 March 1957, the day after the signing in Rome of the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community (EEC), the French Communist daily newspaper L’Humanité portrays social harmonisation within the Common Market as a measure which will bring down the standard of living of the French working class to the lowest common level.
