Transcription of the interview with Mark Eyskens, Belgian Minister for Finance from 1980 to 1981, Prime Minister in 1981, Minister for Economic Affairs from 1981 to 1985 and Minister for External Relations from 1989 to 1992, carried out by the Centre Virtuel de la Connaissance sur l’Europe (CVCE) on 30 March and 30 April 2010 in the studios of the Council of the European Union in Brussels. The interview, conducted by Étienne Deschamps, Researcher at the CVCE, particularly focuses on the following subjects: the origins of his commitment to Europe; the Ecofin Council in the 1980s; Pierre Werner, Helmut Schmidt, Helmut Kohl, François Mitterrand, Hans-Dietrich Genscher and Margaret Thatcher; the upheavals in Eastern Europe following the fall of the Berlin Wall; the Assembly of the Council of Europe; the Charter of Paris for a New Europe (CSCE, 1990); the negotiations for the Treaty of Maastricht on European Union; the institutional development of the European Union; policy and organisation in Belgium in the area of European affairs; the role of Belgium and the other small states in the EU; an assessment of the European integration process.
