In December 1980, one year after Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan which gives rise to a wave of protests in the Western World, Leonid Brezhnev, First Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party, and Andrei Gromyko, his Foreign Minister, call for ‘support for their good work in Afghanistan’.
