Interview with Bjørn Tore Godal, Secretary for Research and International Affairs in the Norwegian Labour Party from 1973 to 1980, Secretary from 1980 to 1982 and leader from 1982 to 1990 of the Oslo Labour Party, Member of the Standing Committee on Finance from 1986 to 1989, Member and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs from 1989 to 1991, Norwegian Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 1997, Minister for Defence from 2000 to 2001 and Ambassador at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Berlin from 2003 to 2007, carried out by the Centre Virtuel de la Connaissance sur l’Europe (CVCE) on 19 June 2007 at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Berlin. The interview was conducted by Christian Lekl, a Scientific Collaborator at the CVCE, and particularly focuses on the following subjects: Norway’s rejection by referendum of accession to the European Communities in 1972, Norway and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), the plan for a Nordic customs union (Nordek), the development of the European Communities and the creation of the European Economic Area (EEA), the fourth enlargement of the European Union and the second referendum in Norway in 1994, and relations between Norway and the European Union.
