Interview with Philippe Maystadt (Nivelles, 11 November 2015) — Excerpt: The 1993 crisis in the European Monetary System (EMS)

In this interview excerpt, Philippe Maystadt, Belgian Finance Minister from 1988 to 1995, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance and External Trade from 1995 to 1998 and Chairman of the Ecofin Council during the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 1993, describes the crisis that hit the European Monetary System (EMS) in 1993. He particularly explains how the risks of disintegration of the EMS were avoided by a widening of the fluctuation margins between currencies, thereby enabling the transition to the second stage of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).
