In this interview excerpt, Sir Brian Unwin, Chairman of the Board of Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise in the United Kingdom from 1987 to 1993, discusses the main European issues he worked on during this period. He particularly mentions the establishment of the single European market, the discussions over whether the UK should sign the Convention implementing the agreement on the gradual abolition of checks at the common borders signed in Schengen on 14 June 1985, and the harmonisation of value-added tax (VAT) between the different Member States of the European Communities.
