Note from the Political Directorate of the French Foreign Ministry on the withdrawal of the French fleet in the Mediterranean (Paris, 12 August 1959)
Text On 12 August 1959, the Political Directorate of the French Foreign Ministry draws up a note on France’s decision to withdraw its naval forces in the Mediterranean from the command of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). It nevertheless raises the possibility of cooperation with its allies as long as this does not lead to the automatic subordination of its naval forces to an external command organisation.
