On 12 February 1969, the French daily newspaper Le Monde outlines the reasons for France’s opposition to the proposal made by British authorities to convene a meeting of the Council of Western European Union (WEU) on the situation in the Middle East, a proposal that would ultimately lead to the WEU ‘empty chair’ crisis, which lasted until 1970.
