Recommendation 386 of the WEU Assembly on the situation in the Middle East (Paris, 17 June 1982)

Text
On 17 June 1982, following the Israeli military intervention in Lebanon, the Assembly of Western European Union (WEU) adopts Recommendation 386 on the situation in the Middle East. The Assembly recommends that the WEU Council express Europe’s determination to uphold Lebanon’s sovereignty and that it condemn this Israeli aggression unreservedly. The document also emphasises the fact that the Council should recall that peace in the Middle East can only be maintained by ensuring the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination within a national territory and recognising the right of the state of Israel to exist within secure and internationally-recognised frontiers.
