The Werner Report and the pursuit of economic and monetary union in the 1980s

In the discussions which followed the period of monetary tension, the Werner Report proved to be a source of inspiration for European monetary integration. At the dawn of the 1980s, several political initiatives (such as the Spierenburg Plan, the Report of Lord Cromer’s Group and the Tindemans Report) and scientific initiatives (including the debates on the concept of a ‘parallel currency’, the proposals by Professors Mundell and Magnifico and the All Saints’ Day Manifesto) came into being. This section contains a collection of these discussion papers drafted after 1973.
