In this interview excerpt, Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the European Commission with responsibility for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship from 2010 to 2014, explains the action she took as Commissioner to promote respect for fundamental rights in various European Union Member States. She particularly mentions the infringement proceedings against France over its policy towards Roma, her opposition to the constitutional reform in Hungary targeting judges that were not affiliated with the ruling political party, and her efforts to prevent the dismantling of the Higher Court of Justice in Romania. She also describes her considerable freedom of action within the European Commission to pursue these matters.
