S.M.I.L.E. project – «Sharing Messina Ideal a Lesson for all Europe»

SMILE COMPETITION

‘60 years after Messina: giving a new impetus to Europe’

The initiative SMILE — Sharing Messina Ideal a Lesson for all Europe — is a European project that is being run in connection with the celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the Messina Conference. The project is organised by an international partnership led by the Italian Council of the European Movement (CIME) and composed of the town of Messina, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (Germany), the Jean Monnet Association (France) and the Centre Virtuel de la Connaissance sur l’Europe — CVCE (Luxembourg). The project is also supported by the European Union’s ‘Europe for Citizens’ Programme.

The Messina Conference, held from 1 to 3 June 1955, played an essential role and paved the way for the Rome Treaties in 1957. It was an important moment in contemporary European history which clarified the path the European Community should take and prevented the failure of the European Defence Community (EDC) from disrupting the process of integration that had just been launched with the creation of the ECSC.

AIMS

The aim of this competition is to encourage young people to find out more about the past, present and future of the European integration process and to rediscover how Europe can meet their needs and expectations.

Particular attention will be paid to the following points:

- reflection on the potential to revive the European ideal;

- recognition of Europe as a community of values and shared destiny;

- identification of forms of cooperation and shared European interests that will help promote a higher level of well-being for all citizens.

ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS

This competition is open to anyone aged between 14 and 19 who lives in Luxembourg, Belgium or the Netherlands. Participation in the competition is free of charge.

Participants take part on an individual basis.

All participants should indicate their last name, first name, age, country of residence, postal address, telephone number and email address on the registration form.

COMPETITION ENTRIES

Projects submitted in the competition must be in multimedia format. The following entries will be accepted: videos, presentations (sequences of slides), drawings or photographs in digital format, and websites, based on the following question:

‘60 years ago, at the beginning of the European integration process, a major crisis threatened to undermine the path advocated by the founding fathers. The Messina Conference provided the impetus and the opportunity to identify specific, effective approaches and methods to revive the European integration process. In a European Union that is now highly advanced and has well-established institutions, a new crisis and a loss of public confidence in these institutions are again putting this common project at risk.

If we asked you today to find a way of renewing and strengthening the European project, what ideas and solutions would you come up with to give a new impetus to the ideals of peace, prosperity and solidarity between countries?’
